Outrider hiring globally for launch of autonomous distribution yards

Outrider Inc. founder and CEO Andrew Smith is the very definition of deliberate. Each robotic advance his company has made to a dangerous or dirty job in a distribution yard builds on another. Since raising $73 million in a Series C round in January, he’s been growing his team.

“While a lot of folks were pulling back on developing their teams, we’ve continued to build out Outrider’s leadership position in both safety technology and deep learning, or AI, for industrial systems,” Smith told me...

Outrider raises $73M to scale autonomous distribution yard business

Outrider Inc., which transforms hazard-filled distribution yards into near-touchless automated operations, has raised $73 million in a Series C funding round.

It plans to use the money to complete final capabilities and safety mechanisms. It also plans to grow from its 175 employees by hiring more engineers domestically and in Europe. Golden, Colorado-based Outrider also plans to scale the sales of its software package to customers. They represent more than 20% of 50,000 yard trucks operating in...

Outrider puts the (robotic) arm to autonomous yard trucks

Disconnecting brake and electric lines from yard tractors and connecting them to semi-trailer and chassis happens 6 billion times annually in 10 million tractor-trailers around the world.

To move these trailers, truck drivers manually connect pressurized brake lines to trailers. That releases the parking brake, allowing trailers to move around the yard. Getting in and out of yard trucks that transition trailers from dock doors to parking spots to public roads is constant.

There’s a robot for that

Outrider ready to scale distribution yard autonomy

Outrider autonomous yard tractor next to a line of trailers

Five-year-old startup Outrider is ready to scale its autonomous approach to logistics hubs, aiming to eliminate freight inefficiency.

The Golden, Colorado-based company is releasing a next-generation autonomy kit for yard automation. Over-the-air software updates and the ability to to swap autonomous yard tractors also include remote technical support.

Outrider extends autonomous distribution yard work to backing up trailers

Outrider, which automates distribution yards for driverless movement of freight in tight quarters of logistics-dependent operations, is adding autonomous trailer movement to its expertise.

“Distribution yards are critical links in the supply chain and prime targets for automating the flow of goods between over-the-road transportation and fulfillment centers, warehouses and manufacturing plants,” Outrider founder and CEO Andrew Smith said in a press release.

Truck Talk: Autonomous hitching edition

FreightWaves regularly covers the six startups pursuing Level 4 high autonomy on the road. This week, we’re looking at autonomy from a different perspective. What happens when those trailers get to their destinations?

Getting hitched

The 10 billion tons of freight moved in trailers could eventually whisk down the highway via robot. Then what happens?

Outrider Inc. CEO Andrew Smith offered his perspective on how automating freight and distribution yards will soon include touchless hitching and...

Outrider CEO: ‘Yard of the future’ is autonomous and electric

Here's an inside look at Outrider's autonomous electric yard operations.

Trucks idling in lines to check in at distribution centers due to inefficient yard operations have no place in the “yard of the future,” Andrew Smith, CEO and founder of Outrider, told FreightWaves.

In this future yard, electric trucks autonomously and efficiently reshuffle and move trailers from one place to another.

A customer 3,000 miles away from the distribution center can enter information on a website to direct an autonomous truck to move trailer No. 8 in parking spot No. 32 to trailer bay...
