For me, that moment started with a tweet.

I was sharing my thoughts on a compliance issue — one of the many daily battles small carriers and owner-operators face — when Craig Fuller, CEO of FreightWaves, saw it. He reached out via direct message, inviting me to speak at the...

April Class 8 truck orders tank but OEMs have ample backlogs

A dearth of Class 8 truck orders in April is more technical than meaningful. Major OEMs express optimism about delivering plenty of new equipment to ease pandemic-related pent-up demand.

Preliminary North America net orders  were 11,600 units, down 27% from a year ago and off 39% compared to March, according to ACT Research. FTR Transportation Intelligence pegged preliminary orders at 12,050 units, down 20% year over year and 37% from March.

Small carriers, owner operators remain lifeblood of transportation during market downturn

Small carriers and owner operators make up the large majority of the nation’s carrier base. Very small carriers – fleets with one to six tractors – account for 86% of total U.S. carriers, according to recent FMCSA data. Small carriers – those with 7 to 19 tractors – make up another 9%. All together, these fleets provide over 30% of the industry’s available power units.

Despite their prevalence in the market, these players tend to be the most affected during market downturns. Smaller teams means...

Senate Republicans aim to abolish Biden’s trucking emissions rule

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans introduced a joint resolution on Thursday to overturn the Biden administration’s recent emissions reduction rule for trucks that the lawmakers warn is too costly for truckers and consumers.

The rule, finalized by the Environmental Protection Agency in December and set to go into effect March 27, sets stringent new standards for nitrous oxide and other pollutants for heavy-duty trucks beginning no later than model year 2027.
