Overview

Evans Delivery Co. was founded by Albert L. Evans, Sr. in 1939. His company began with two trucks handling less-than-truckload (LTL) freight in and around Pottsville, Pennsylvania, which is now about two hours northwest of Philadelphia.

The company continued to grow in the regional LTL market and gradually expanded its operational area throughout Pennsylvania, as well as into New Jersey, New York and Maryland. In 1973, Evans Delivery began intermodal services to serve the steamship...

What causes the booms and busts of the trucking cycle?

Trucking is a massively cyclical industry.

How is it possible to have a “driver shortage” and a capacity glut at the same time?

This is a common refrain that I hear when talking about a slowing freight market. The reality is that the “driver shortage” doesn’t mean what most people think it means.

First, we need to differentiate between the freight market and trucking companies. Trucking companies participate in the freight market, but are not the “market.”

Moreover, they say, no one at CFL has been returning their calls since the LTL carrier shuttered operations in mid-December.

A source familiar with the company told FreightWaves that up to 100 owner-operators and independent contractors have not...

Commentary: Trucking vs. the diesel shortage

Throughout the last several months, the steady increase in diesel fuel prices has created a hectic pricing environment in the freight industry due to the inability to accurately factor in fuel costs for bidding months, or even weeks, in advance of hauling the load. This inconvenience already has the potential to be very costly, but what if the driver is turned away at the station where he or she intends to refuel because there is no diesel at the pump? Yes, this is a real possibility in today’s...
