OnTrac, LaserShip rebrand into `OnTrac’ name

OnTrac and LaserShip formally announced late Friday plans to rebrand into what may presumably be the more familiar and easier-to-pronounce “OnTrac” name.

Separately, the rebranded firm, which had been known as LaserShip-OnTrac, finalized plans to enter the Texas market with service to Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. The expansion, which is set to start July 14 but which could begin sooner, will add millions of consumers to OnTrac’s 250 million-person addressable network.

FedEx combining main units — except LTL — into 1 organization

In unarguably one of the most important moves in its history, FedEx Corp. said Wednesday it will combine three of its operating units, including its two largest, into one business known as Federal Express Corp.

The transition will bring FedEx’s (NYSE: FDX) air, ground parcel and FedEx Services businesses under one umbrella, effective June 1, 2024. FedEx Freight, the company’s LTL operation, will continue to operate as a stand-alone entity within the new corporation. The company didn’t explain...

FedEx to combine all but LTL into 1 organization

In arguably one of the most important moves in its history, FedEx Corp. said Wednesday it will combine most of its operating units into one business known as Federal Express Corp.

The transition will bring FedEx’s air, ground parcel and other operating business under one umbrella, effective June 1, 2024. FedEx Freight, the company’s LTL operation, will continue to operate as a stand-alone entity within the new corporation.

Quiet Platforms president leaves company

Shekar Natarajan is out as president of logistics provider Quiet Platforms.

In a statement issued late Monday, the company said that Natarajan had exited the company, effective immediately. His departure was due to disappointing results at Quiet and the need to pull back on expenses in order to “reset the business,” according to a memo from retailing giant AEO Inc. (NYSE: AEO), Quiet’s parent.

Niall Murphy, a longtime entrepreneur who joined Quiet in December as chief business officer, will...

Will Postal Service ride to the rescue if Teamsters strike UPS? Maybe

Twenty-six years ago, the U.S. Postal Service stepped into the breach when a strike by the Teamsters union shut down virtually all of UPS Inc.’s domestic delivery network. By the accounts of people who were around at the time, the Postal Service performed admirably under difficult circumstances.

More than a quarter-century later, the same scenario confronts the parcel-shipping world, and people are again looking to the Postal Service for relief. Can it come through?

The fact is that with 21...

GLS aims to save parcel shippers big with small-haul pricing

Western regional parcel carrier GLS hopes that it can save its shippers significant money by being very specific about how it costs out its services.

The Dutch carrier, with U.S. headquarters in Santa Fe Springs, California, recently announced the launch of its Zone 0 — defined by GLS as super short-haul, super-dense urban areas — and Zone 1 pricing tiers, in what it called a more targeted approach to parcel pricing than what it is offered by the large carriers.

According to GLS, its strategy...

How aggressive is FedEx becoming? It depends

March 31 is approaching, and it’s unclear how effective FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) has been in its push to convince UPS (NYSE: UPS) shippers to move business over by the end of this month to ensure their goods will get priority treatment in the event of a Teamsters union strike this summer against UPS.

It is too early for many UPS shippers to get scared that their volumes will get stuck in the event that 350,000 Teamsters walk off the job Aug. 1 without a contract being agreed upon, said Satish...
