FedEx Freight adds returns to home delivery portfolio

FedEx Freight, FedEx Corp.’s less-than-truckload unit, said Friday that it has added returns to the services offered by its FedEx Freight Direct business, which handles residential and commercial deliveries of big and bulky items ordered online.

The returns service will be available for pickups that don’t require appointments, or have two-hour appointment windows, the FedEx (NYSE: FDX) unit said. Pickups can be made outside of a location, inside a garage, and inside the first ground-level room...

UPS extends residential delivery surcharges beyond peak season

In an unprecedented move, UPS Inc. will impose U.S. residential delivery surcharges beyond the peak delivery season instead of letting the levies fall away in mid-January.

The Atlanta-based carrier has also done away with the word “peak” in its description of surcharges and will now just call them “demand” surcharges. The carrier’s rationale is that the two words can be used interchangeably.

In a statement, UPS said the surcharges “help protect our network and ensure UPS receives appropriate...

Bad weather to delay more than 10 million holiday packages, consultancy says

More than 10 million holiday packages did not reach their destinations on Friday nor will they reach their destinations by Christmas Eve, casualties of the weather nightmare ensnaring more than half of the country, consultancy ShipMatrix Inc. said Saturday.

The bad weather, which has caused delays at parcel carriers’ East Coast and Midwest air and ground hubs, and has made driving slow and treacherous across the nation’s roads and highways, means that about 15% of deliveries scheduled for Friday...

The leap of faith at FedEx

FedEx Corp. has managed through multiple “show-me” moments in its half-century of operations. But none may be as important as what transpired Tuesday night.

FedEx’s (NYSE: FDX) fiscal 2023 second-quarter results, coming on the heels of a first quarter that included a pre-announcement of shockingly bad numbers, were important in trying to convince analysts, investors and the transportation community that the business either has been stabilized, albeit at what would be considered...

FedEx’s fiscal 2nd-quarter results benefit from cost cuts

FedEx Corp. posted fiscal 2023 second-quarter results late Tuesday that demonstrated its ability to quickly slash costs but also confirmed the damage a slowdown in demand is inflicting on its top line.

FedEx (NYSE: FDX) reported adjusted diluted earnings per share of $3.18, coming in above consensus estimates of $2.77. However, revenue came in about $900 million light at $22.8 billion and below the $23.5 billion revenue level in its fiscal 2022 second quarter.

Adjusted operating income came in at...

Postal Service ups EV fleet mix to 66,000 new trucks

The U.S. Postal Service said Tuesday that it would acquire at least 66,000 battery-electric delivery vehicles over the next six years, doubling its fleet electrification targets from what it had forecast five months ago.

In addition, the Postal Service said it will explore the feasibility of fully electrifying its total delivery fleet, which currently stands at 220,000 trucks.

As part of what will be a $9.6 billion investment, the Postal Service said it will purchase at least 60,000...

If the Teamsters union strikes, will UPS close its doors?

In August 1997, the Teamsters walked off the job at UPS Inc. in the first non-wildcat strike in the relationship’s long history.  With an all-Teamsters labor force and no plans to call in replacement workers to deliver goods, UPS shuttered its massive U.S. ground delivery network rather than risk permanently damaging its reputation with customers.

The strike lasted 15 days, sending an avalanche of parcel and letter volumes to rival carriers, burying their networks and, in many cases, causing...
