B&M, one of the UK’s leading variety retailers, has announced it is increasing its cargo into the Port of Liverpool by 30 per cent following frustrations with delay-struck southern ports.

Liverpool rail services reduce road traffic

A rail freight service launched to transport containers from the Port of Liverpool to Scotland has been a major success, according to its operator Peel Ports, and has helped to minimise pressure on local roads.

Since launching in August 2018 the rail service has saved over half a million road miles being driven on the UK’s motorways. It has also resulted in a significant reduction in HGV movements around Seaforth, and saved around 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide in the process.

Peel Ports to invest in apprentice training

Peel Ports is to invest around £300,000 via the apprenticeship levy to train around 100 existing staff. The new intake marks a five-fold increase in staff being put through vocational education, with 19 employees being trained in 2018.

The training will cover subjects from leadership to port operations and involve workers from Peel Ports’ locations in Liverpool, Manchester, Heysham and eventually Sheerness and Great Yarmouth.
