Rare air: Kenworth and Peterbilt electric trucks take on Pikes Peak

Kenworth and Peterbilt showed off real-world capability in driving battery-electric and hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado. But a more meaningful lesson came in descending the mountain.

The Kenworth T680 fuel cell electric vehicle and a battery-electric Peterbilt Model 579EV became the first Class 8 zero-emissions vehicles to negotiate grades between 7% and 10% that are part of the 12.42-mile Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course.

Used truck sales recovery firming up for all players

Used truck pricing pressure is easing as stakeholders from manufacturers to dealers report growing sales momentum despite the lingering pandemic — and because of it.

As the tail of the dog in trucking, used truck sales fall when new truck sales slow. So when major manufacturers shuttered assembly plants for six weeks in March and April, used equipment all but froze. Already low prices dropped even further. Loose capacity heading into the pandemic tightened.

However, in recent months as freight...

Peterbilt proves adage that everything is bigger in Texas

Peterbilt plant in Denton, Texas

Peterbilt Motors started building heavy-duty trucks in Denton, Texas 40 years ago this month. After nearly doubling in size in four decades, the plant is evidence of the adage that everything is bigger in Texas. Or it grows to become that way.

Located about an hour’s drive north from Fort Worth, the facility has become the main manufacturing facility for the PACCAR Inc. (NASDAQ: PCAR) brand. The plant began operation as a 435,000 square-foot facility with 81 employees on 80 acres of land.

Mack MD early production

Mack Trucks is building early units of its new medium-duty MD Series trucks in a former comic book publishing plant near Roanoke, Virginia.

It will begin full production at the newly formed Roanoke Valley Operations begins Sept. 1. That’s because the coronavirus pandemic delayed the original start of production in July.

Mack, a unit of Sweden’s Volvo Group, invested $13 million to convert the plant to make its first medium-duty truck in nearly two decades. The MD Series takes grille and hood...

PACCAR moves deliberately on electric and driverless trucks

PACCAR electric truck

PACCAR Inc. (NASDAQ: PCAR) isn’t rushing electric trucks to market. But it says its Kenworth, Peterbilt and European DAF brands will sell them at the right time.

“Our goal is to make sure that we’re in a position to provide our customers the lowest-operating-cost vehicles whenever the market is ready, when there’s infrastructure, when there’s regulation and when the technology is ready,” CEO Preston Feight said Tuesday.

“It’s [the] early days, and we feel like we’re really on top of it, and we’re...
