But a new study from the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) points to a couple of cautions. First is methane leakage from the source of the RNG. Methane escaping into the atmosphere is a huge contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gas.

Second, and most...

Commentary: Looking inside Paccar’s humble record streak

Paccar Inc. CEO Preston Feight could be forgiven for taking a victory lap celebrating the truckmaker’s 85th consecutive year of net profits.

No forgiveness needed. The company’s leader since 2019 declined to brag. That’s not the Paccar way. Humility, consistency and conservatism rule the day in Bellevue, Washington, where suit and tie is common attire even in a business culture that has come to eschew such formality.

In the company’s earnings release on Tuesday, Feight thanked the 31,100 global...

New Class 8 truck deliveries fall for 4 consecutive months

The strength in new Class 8 orders belies a four-month slide in deliveries while used truck prices continue to fall, albeit more slowly as 2023 comes to a close.

Through the first 11 months of the year, the industry has delivered 242,881 new Class 8 trucks, 7.8% more than the same period in 2022, according to Ward’s Intelligence. But the year-over-year lead has shrunk each month since February when sales were 35% ahead compared with 2022.

This contrasts with ACT Research, which reported net...

Is Nikola counting too much on California for salvation?

Nikola Corp.’s ability to escape near-death experiences is being tested by shouldering the $61.8 million cost of repairing its fire-prone battery electric trucks. But California’s generous incentives for electric trucks may be a path to survival as the startup’s latest peril plays out.

“California is a state on the cutting edge of technology and has big tailwinds for the transition to zero-emissions trucking with both carrots and sticks from government incentives and regulations,” Nikola CEO...
