Running on Ice: Chinese tariffs’ impact on the pharmaceutical supply chain

The will-they, won’t-they of tariffs has been looming over the pharmaceutical industry. Earlier this week, it looked like 25% tariffs were set to be imposed on top trading partners Canada and Mexico. Then the tariffs were put on hold for a month. For the moment, that leaves only the 10% tariffs on China to contend with.

Impacts of the Chinese tariffs on the pharmaceutical industry stand to be significant. The U.S. is already struggling with...

United Airlines leverages small freighter for Puerto Rico pharma exports

United Airlines has arranged a quasi-charter service with a small cargo airline that flies narrowbody freighters from Puerto Rico to feed its Chicago hub with pharmaceutical shipments heading overseas and to health care companies in the Midwest.

The transaction is noteworthy because of the supply chain benefits for businesses, the fact that United Cargo is supplementing capacity with a narrowbody freighter for the first time, and because it is partnering with a startup FreightTech company and a...

Running on Ice: New drug formulas could mean less cold chain involvement

We have huge developments in protein-based medicines courtesy of researchers at Pennsylvania State University. The Penn State team developed a new oil-based drug formulation which does not degrade with increases in temperature. Protein-based drugs are traditionally prepared in a water-based formulation. This new research could potentially be applied to insulin, certain antibodies, and viral vaccines, reducing the need for these items to be kept so...

There is a new refrigerant on the market, and it’s checking a fair number of win boxes. Honeywell, yes the same ones that make the fan at nanna’s house, has developed the Solstice ze refrigerant, which is 46% more energy-efficient than traditional ammonia-powered solutions.

Cold storage needs are rising worldwide. Green initiatives are also accelerating. As a result, shippers are looking to reduce carbon emissions while not sacrificing product or...

Can drones be the aspirin for pharma supply chain headaches?

A trio of companies are aiming to integrate autonomous drones into the global pharmaceutical and healthcare industries

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, health care workers have been under siege. Supply chain disruptions have limited access to everything from personal protective equipment to vaccines for both COVID-related illnesses and familiar diseases like the flu, at a time when the globe needs them most.

Seeing those disruptions, a trio of companies — Melbourne, Australia-based Swoop Aero, London’s Skyports and Kelberg, Germany-headquartered BD Rowa — are joining forces to open up an air-based...
