Atlas Air gives pilots pay increase on heels of Q1 growth

Contract cargo airline and aircraft lessor Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings beat analyst expectations with adjusted net income of $29.9 million, or $1.15 per diluted share, and total revenue of $644 million in the first quarter due to strong demand for its charter service and higher airfreight rates due to transport scarcity caused by the coronavirus. 

Atlas’ stock (NASDAQ: AAWW) was up 5.37% to $37.42 prior to noon Thursday and is up more than a third since the start of the year.

New York pilot dies after boarding accident

A 35-year veteran of the Sandy Hook Pilots Association  died Monday after a fall while boarding a containership inbound to New York Harbor, according to the Coast Guard and pilots.

Dennis R. Sherwood, of Freehold, N.J., was climbing an accommodation ladder to board the U.S.-flagged Maersk Kensington at the Ambrose Light pilot station outside the harbor approaches at 4:30 a.m., Coast Guard officials said.

The Coast Guard has set Great Lakes pilots’ rates 11% higher than last year due to inflation, the addition of two working pilots and updated historic traffic data.

Under the final rule effective June 10, per pilot hourly pay will range from $306 to $733 — depending on the district — up from $271 to $653 last year. Total target pilot compensation rises to $359,887 from $352,485.
