In its weekly report for 10–16 March, ReCAAP ISC informed of five incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia. Of these, four were actual incidents (all CAT 4 incidents) and one was an attempted incident.

10 armed robberies against ships in Asia in February

A total of 10 incidents of armed robbery against ships were reported in Asia in February 2020, the ReCAAP ISC said in its latest monthly piracy report. Of these, four incidents occurred in India alone and another four occurred in the Singapore Strait, making a total of eight incidents in the region within 2020. Overall, the actual incidents in January-February 2020 increased compared to the same period of 2019.

In its weekly report for 25 February -2 March, ReCAAP ISC informed of four incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia. All four were CAT 4 (least significant) incidents. Of the four incidents, one occurred in the Kutubdia Channel, Bangladesh; one at North Anchorage, Kakinada, India; one at Panjang Anchorage, Indonesia; and one in the eastbound lane of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) in the Singapore Strait.

Two incidents against ships in India last week

In its weekly report for 18-24 February, ReCAAP ISC informed of two incidents of armed robbery against ships in Asia, both of which were CAT 4 (least significant) incidents. One occurred to a tanker while underway off Gujarat, India; and another incident occurred to another tanker anchored at Kakinada anchorage, India.

A total of 11 incidents of armed robbery against ships were reported in Asia in January 2020, ReCAAP ISC said in its monthly report. The number of actual incidents is the same with December 2019. The two alarming issues concern the recurrence of four incidents in the Singapore Strait and one crew abduction off Malaysia in January 2020.

In its weekly report for 21-27 January, ReCAAP ISC informed of three armed robberies against ships, comprising one CAT 3 incident and two CAT 4 incidents. Piracy in Asia increases with 82 incidents in 2019

A total of 82 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asia were reported in 2019, says ReCAAP ISC in its Annual Report, noting a 15% increase in the actual incidents compared to 2018. Despite the increase, these numbers are still the second lowest since 2007.
