Will autonomous trucks need ELDs? No — well, maybe

This is part of a FreightWaves series on the electronic logging device mandate. Federal regulators began enforcing the mandate on April 1, 2018. Read more from this series here.

Driverless trucks, which may or may not be the future state of long-haul heavy-duty trucking, likely won’t need electronic logging devices. Nor will hours-of-service regulations won’t apply to them. But the reality is more nuanced.

“Anytime a human is involved, ELDs will matter,” said Wiley Deck, vice president of...

Nikola will make Plus autonomous truck technology standard in 2024

Nikola Corp. will test autonomous driving software from Plus on its battery- and fuel cell-electric trucks later this year and become the first zero-tailpipe-emission truck maker to make it standard in 2024.

Plus requires drivers in the cab as it opens up more autonomous features through its PlusDrive system. It is aiming for driverless operation. But it wants to log 8 billion miles of operation with safety drivers monitoring the technology before removing the driver.

The Plus automated driving...

Missteps and milestones mark 2022 in autonomous trucking

Docudrama script writers must be giddy at the “Succession”-esque tale unfolding at TuSimple Holdings. Just a year ago it leapfrogged the competition by demonstrating an 80-mile driverless truck pilot on a U.S. public highway.

TuSimple repeated the technological feat, several times early in 2022. But then it gave way to repeated capriciousness that erased 95% of the company’s stock value. Could TuSimple be ripe for a takeover or sale to private equity? Consider:

An inconvenient truth about electric trucks

A few days in Germany revealed an inconvenient truth about real-world applications of battery-electric and hydrogen-powered trucks. Inadequate infrastructure, a lack of drivers and traffic congestion will frustrate meaningful expansion for sometime to come.

Jolt of electric truck reality

A visit to the aging DB Schenker freight distribution center outside Frankfurt, Germany, injected a jolt of reality about electric trucks. The near giddiness surrounding the reveal of battery-electric and...
