Residents of Port Chalmers and surrounding areas have welcomed moves by Port Otago to mitigate the noise from visiting container ships, but are hoping for more.

Monday’s arrival of the largest container vessel to visit Port Chalmers in the past 47 years heralds a significant change for Southern export services.

Worker struck by container at Port Chalmers (ODT)

A Port Otago worker appears to have had a lucky escape after being struck by a container being loaded on to the vessel Maersk Inverness at Port Chalmers in Sunday’s morning.

Police and fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene in Beach St about 11.30am.
