Surge in transhipment traffic pushes port of Tanjung Pelepas to a new record

Malaysia’s port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) saw 8% growth in 2020, to a record-breaking 9.8m teu, making it an outlier among South-east Asia’s competing transhipment hubs.
The growth the port, which is operated by Maersk subsidiary APM Terminals as the carrier’s key transhipment hub in the region, came despite global economic uncertainties and the Covid-crisis .

Major ports and carriers report large increases in container rollovers

More than one in three containers shipped globally in December were rolled-over at transhipment hubs, according to new research from data tracking firm Ocean Insights.
Its monthly analysis of container rollovers at the top 20 global ports revealed that the global average had increased to 37% last month, with some hubs seeing far higher numbers.

Some relief at last for Bangladesh shippers as India offers use of its ports

India has offered Bangladesh shippers the use of its seaports for export and import trade to third countries.
The offer came during a virtual meeting last week between the prime ministers of the two countries, as the regional transhipment hub ports of Singapore, Colombo and Port Klang, with limited manpower during the pandemic and facing severe congestion, are struggling to handle containers.

Westports prepares for terminal expansion in 2021

Malaysia’s Westports has disclosed that work on its MYR10 billion (US$2.4 billion) terminal expansion will begin in 2021.

This disclosure came with its third quarter results, which showed a 5.5% increase in cumulative net profit to MYR491 million (US$118.03 million), as throughput in the three months to September grew by 6% year-on-year to 2.93 million TEU. Cumulative throughput during the nine month period was 7.73 million TEU, down 4% on-year, due to the disruptions caused by Covid-19.

Covid-19 crisis slashes Westports volumes

A 17% decline in cargo volumes caused by the Covid-19 crisis has seen profits plunge 19% year-on-year at Malaysian terminal operator Westports during Q2 2020.

Westports is one of two terminal operators in Port Klang, Malaysia’s busiest container port. Overall, Westports’ Q2 profits fell MYR134.34 million (US$31.39 million) while volumes fell to 2.28 million TEU. Throughput in H1 2020 totalled 4.8 million TEU, down from 5.27 million TEU in H1 2019.

Volume incentives offered as Port Klang looks to mitigate Covid effect

Malaysia’s Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said that Port Klang Authority (PKA) will offer incentives to terminal operators this year, as throughput is expected to decline by over 16% year-on-year, to 11.4 million TEU, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Port Klang is Malaysia’s busiest container port, having handled over 13.6 million TEU in 2019, will offer MYR17 million (US$4 million) in incentives.
