Westports Holdings, which runs nine container terminals in Malaysia’s Port Klang, said the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic will be seen from the second quarter of 2020, as the impact of the lock downs in a number of countries spreads.

Strong first half for Port Klang’s Westports, but can it win back traffic from Singapore?

Port Klang terminal operator Westports is expecting to break the 10m teu mark for the first time this year, as Malaysia continues its fightback against fierce competition from Singapore.

Port Klang introduces box congestion solutions

The Port Klang Authority (PKA) will introduce two new systems which will enable freight forwarding companies to know in advance the arrival and exit times of their cargo, thus reducing traffic congestion caused by container lorries at the port.

Transportation Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said with the introduction of the Cargomove System and the Linkhaul system, the authorities hope the traffic congestion caused by such lorries in the port area could be reduced by up to 20%.

Rail project to ease Port Klang congestion

The decision to resume the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project is expected to provide comfort to the local residents who have been facing traffic congestion and damage to infrastructure due to container lorries plying the roads in the port town for so long.

COSCO plans expansion of business operations in Malaysia

COSCO Shipping International (Singapore) Co plans to expand its business operations in Malaysia by obtaining a lease of a piece of land in the port area of Port Klang where it will construct a 300,000 square foot warehouse.

The company is also currently in negotiations with a party in Malaysia with the view of a potential cooperation, which may involve the proposed acquisition of certain logistics businesses, or the collaboration of a logistics partnership business in the country.

Malaysian Freight Forwarders want more regulations

Port Klang: The Federation of Malaysian Freight Forwarders wants the Federal Government to formulate regulations to prevent international shipping lines from crippling them with expensive deposits.

The association’s vice-president Datuk Tony Chia said freight forwarders are currently required to put down a deposit of between RM1,000 and RM4,000 per container brought in by the shipping lines.
