Five vessels diverted from Port of New Orleans

Container carriers weren’t taking any chances with what grew to a Category 4 hurricane, steering some vessels away from a Gulf Coast port expected to be hit by the powerful storm. 

Carrier schedules showed five of 13 services bypassed calls at the Port of New Orleans this week because of Hurricane Laura.

Cristobal closes Port of New Orleans terminals

Port of New Orleans terminals were closed Monday after Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall near Grand Isle, Louisiana, on Sunday evening.

Although the storm had been downgraded to a tropical depression and moved east on Monday, terminals were closed “given the continued heavy rainfall and uncertainty of rain and wind conditions,” said Renee Aragon Dolese, Port NOLA’s director of marketing and communications.

Port NOLA marks an annual container record

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) moved more containers in 2018 than at any time in its history, totaling 591,253 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 12.3 percent compared to one year ago. The record marks the fifth year in a row Port NOLA has surpassed the half million TEU-mark at its Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal, which is operated by New Orleans Terminal and Ports America.
