Beirut death toll rises as PM vows retribution on those responsible

Authorities in Lebanon say that some 2,750tonnes of ammonium nitrate were ignited following a fire at a nearby warehouse where fireworks were stored, causing the massive explosion and subsequent fire that has seen at least 100 people and 4,000 injured crowding Beirut’s hospitals.

Death toll climbing after Port of Beirut explosion

At least 2,750 people have been injured and more than 50 killed in a massive explosion at the Port of Beirut. 

CNN reported that the explosion, which occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday in Lebanon’s capital, has caused buildings to collapse and that neighborhoods around the port are unrecognizable.

Rescue operations are ongoing and hospitals in Beirut reportedly are overwhelmed. The number of injured and killed is expected to climb.

An explosion at the port of Beirut in Lebanon has caused carnage in the country’s capital. The blast occurred after what appeared to be fireworks seen crackling over the buildings before a massive blast engulfed the surrounding buildings at around 5pm UK time.
