GPA paving way for more vehicles at Port of Brunswick

The Georgia Ports Authority is adding a fourth berth at the Port of Brunswick, 85 acres for more auto processing and 360,000 square feet of warehousing in a $150 million project.

“We’re expanding berth and terminal capacity at both Colonel’s Island and Mayor’s Point so that we are ready to take on additional trade,” GPA Executive Director Griff Lynch said during last week’s Brunswick State of the Port event. “The investments we are making will lay the groundwork for job growth and new...

Chief officer’s ballast level error blamed for Golden Ray capsizing

The National Transportation Safety Board has determined inaccurate stability calculations led to the September 2019 capsizing of the Golden Ray in Georgia’s St. Simons Sound.

“The NTSB determined the probable cause of the capsizing of the Golden Ray was the chief officer’s error entering ballast quantities into the stability calculation program, which led to his incorrect determination of the vessel’s stability and resulted in the Golden Ray having an insufficient righting arm to counteract the...

Group to build 1.2 million-square-foot industrial park near Savannah port

Savannah, Georgia’s virtuous cycle of industrial development continued on Wednesday with the announcement that a 1.2 million-square-foot industrial park will be built about  15 miles from the port of Savannah.

The park, coined the “Southeast Gateway,” will be erected on a 137-acre parcel located 1 mile from Interstate 95 and 6 miles from the junction of Interstates 16 and 95, where virtually all inland traffic to and from the port flows. The park will consist of a 1 million-square-foot...

Golden Ray wreckage removal operation a go again

The cutting apart of the Golden Ray has resumed — again.

The dismantling of the capsized roll-on/roll-off vessel has been hindered by several work stoppages, the most recent being a fire that erupted inside the wreck May 14.

The Golden Ray has been on its side in St. Simons Sound since the ship ran aground and capsized after departing the Port of Brunswick in Georgia on Sept. 9, 2019.

The St. Simons Sound Incident Unified Command said Thursday that crews had begun “cycling the chain back into the...

Port of Savannah year-over-year container volume up 38%

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reported this week the Port of Savannah had achieved its busiest April on record and its second-busiest month ever. The busiest occurred just one month earlier.

The Port of Savannah handled 466,633 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in April, a 38% increase — or about 128,700 TEUs — year-over-year. The record-setting March total was 498,000 TEUs.

“Demand for products and services both domestically and abroad is driving significant gains in Georgia’s cargo...

Fire blamed for latest Golden Ray dismantling delay

The removal of the Golden Ray wreckage from Georgia’s St. Simons Sound has been plagued by delays — the roll-on/roll-off vessel capsized in the early-morning hours of Sept. 9, 2019. Now the work to cut apart the car carrier has been brought to a screeching halt again, this time by a fire inside the wreck.

The fire erupted Friday afternoon inside the still partially intact vessel, which has been on its side near the Port of Brunswick since it ran aground and fell over.

Salvaging The Overturned Golden Ray Carrier

Salvage operations of the massive Golden Ray ship from St. Simons Sound continue as part of the response team concentrates on the environmental impact, reports News4Jax.

Overturned Carrier

As a massive crane continues to use a massive chain to slice through the solid steel hull of the car carrier that overturned while sailing out of the Port of Brunswick in September 2019, video shared by Incident Response shows responders releasing a rehabilitated laughing gull that was found in an oil...

Among Piers: South Carolina Ports COO Woman of the Year

Barbara Melvin, the South Carolina Ports Authority’s chief operating officer, has been named the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance’s 2021 Woman of the Year.

“Barbara has held many leadership positions at the port over the past 23 years, which has given her a deep understanding of port...

Golden Ray dismantling continues into new year

The new year has begun the same way the last one did in St. Simons Sound. The M/V Golden Ray is still there.

To be fair, not all of the capsized car carrier remains off the coast of the Port of Brunswick, Georgia. Two of eight sections have been cut off and at some point in 2021, all traces of the 2019 accident should be gone.

St. Simons Sound Incident Response is indeed responsive to inquiries and posts regular updates on the mission to cut apart the vessel, which was transporting about 4,300...
