Chain break latest kink in Golden Ray dismantling

Salvage crews in St. Simons Sound on Tuesday continued cutting the first of eight huge sections of the M/V Golden Ray wreckage.

The Golden Ray ran aground and capsized while departing from the Port of Brunswick in Georgia in September 2019. The roll-on/roll-off vessel, with about 4,300 vehicles on board, has remained on its side in St. Simons Sound since the accident.

The dismantling was delayed first by a coronavirus infection among the response personnel in July, then by the arrival of the...

Golden Ray dismantling equipment arrives in St. Simons Sound

The heavy-lift vessel needed to dismantle the M/V Golden Ray, the car carrier that has been on its side off the coast of Georgia since capsizing more than a year ago, arrived in St. Simons Sound on Tuesday.

“The next step in the process is final rigging and anchoring, which will take place over the next several days,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Michael Himes told American Shipper. “Once that is complete, we will begin cutting operations, weather permitting.”

The VB10,000 is equipped with two...

Investigator testifies Golden Ray violated stability regulations

A naval architect testified Tuesday that the Golden Ray’s ballast level was not compliant with stability regulations when the vehicle carrier capsized while departing the Port of Brunswick in September 2019.

“If the vessel had kept the additional ballast on board that was discharged during the Freeport-to-Jacksonville voyage, this would have resulted in full compliance with the 2008 Intact Stability Code and likely would have prevented the capsize,” said Lt. Ian Oviatt of the U.S. Coast Guard...

Pilot radioed ‘I’m losing her’ as Golden Ray capsized

The pilot guiding the M/V Golden Ray out of St. Simons Sound recalled seeing “fear in the faces” of the crew as the car carrier capsized.

Port of Brunswick pilot Jonathan Tennant, represented by counsel, testified Friday during a hearing being conducted to determine the cause of the September 2019 capsizing of the roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel.

Alarm blared during Golden Ray capsizing

Shouting followed by a continuous alarm provided the most dramatic moments in the first day of a hearing into the cause of last year’s capsizing of the M/V Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound.

The audio recording recovered from the roll-on/roll-off vessel lasted for several minutes and was played Monday as part of the first exhibits at the hearing in Brunswick, Georgia.

Golden Ray capsizing hearing begins Monday

The cause of last year’s capsizing of the M/V Golden Ray and resulting pollution of coastal Georgia waters will be scrutinized during a seven-day public hearing that will get underway Monday.

The U.S. Coast Guard said the hearing will focus on the condition of the vessel prior to and at the time the vehicle carrier capsized and caught fire Sept. 8, 2019. It also will look at “the ship, owner and operator organizational structures and culture, the regulatory compliance record of the vessel and...

Savannah volume down just 1% and total tonnage a record

A small dip can be a big win during a pandemic, when global supply chain disruptions have taken huge bites out of volumes at U.S. ports.

So the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announcement Monday that fiscal-year volume at the Port of Savannah was down by less than 1% compared to the previous year wasn’t bad news.

The Port of Savannah handled 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in fiscal year 2020, which ended June 30.

And the GPA found good news where it could. It said that despite...

COVID-19, storm season sideline Golden Ray dismantling

The M/V Golden Ray will remain on its side in Georgia’s St. Simons Sound more than a year after the car carrier capsized.

Tom Wiker of Gallagher Marine Systems said during a press conference Friday that the operation to cut and dismantle the vessel was “put on pause” Thursday because of impacts from the coronavirus pandemic as well as the arrival of the hurricane season and will remain suspended until the first of October. Gallagher Marine Systems is acting as the responsible party for Hyundai...
