SA Ports Collaborating Amid COVID-19

South African port landlord Transnet National Ports Authority is leveraging off its complementary port system to minimise the impact of COVID-19 on its marine operations.

The eight commercial ports have been supporting one another amid COVID-19, including redeploying staff and equipment where necessary to support ports more severely affected by COVID-19.

Lessons learnt at the Port of Cape Town, which was badly affected in June and into early July, have since been transferred to other ports.

Ship Repair Facilities Operating at 100% Capacity

South African port landlord Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced that its ship repair facilities are now operating at 100% capacity following the easing of lockdown restrictions to Level 4.

Operations will be guided by the agents’ docking schedules in the respective ports. TNPA’s existing ship repair facilities are located at the ports of Durban, East London and Cape Town, where there are dry docks, and at Port Elizabeth and Mossel Bay where there are slipways.

East London Cruising to Popularity

South Africa’s only river port, the Port of East London, is increasing its popularity as a cruise port with 14 cruise liner calls this season – the most calls it has ever received in a single season.

Port of Ngqura’s Tug SHASA Returns Home

Tug SHASA, the first tugboat delivered to Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) Port of Ngqura, has returned home after her fifth bi-annual service in the Princess Elizabeth Graving Dock in the Port of East London.
