Port of Felixstowe boosts capacity

The Port of Felixstowe and leading Danish ferry operator DFDS have agreed to increase roll-on/roll-off (ro/ro) capacity at the UK port by over 40% through investment in a new linkspan, tractor units and additional trailer parking facilities.

Commenting on the move, Clemence Cheng, Chief Executive Officer at the Port of Felixstowe and Executive Director, Hutchison Ports, said:

“As well as being the UK’s largest container port, Felixstowe is also a key gateway for roll-on/roll-off trade with...

Felixstowe to provide more capacity for growing DFDS ro-ro traffic

The port of Felixstowe has announced that it is to increase its ro-ro capacity for ferry operator DFDS by some 40%.
The development could be seen to be preparation for a surge in demand for services outside the cross-Channel Dover Straits corridor post-Brexit, but a source at the port said it was already in its plans and the timing with Brexit was “largely coincidental”.
The UK’s largest container port will build a …

Liverpool momentum builds as Maersk and MSC commit to permanent U.S service

EM Athens at Port of Liverpool

The 2M shipping line alliance has confirmed that Liverpool will become a permanent call on its TA4 service connecting Europe with several US ports.

The move follows the introduction of a temporary call in July 2018 resulting from continued disruption at the Port of Felixstowe.

The service is currently used to export UK cargo such as food produce and retail, but also is attracting interest for trade in manufacturing and industrial goods.

Documentary: How shore leave at Felixstowe Seafarer Centre feels like

An observational short documentary by the UK director, Eleanor Mortimer, depicts how a shore leave for a cargo-ship crew at the Felixstowe Seafarer Centre feels like.

Due to visa restrictions and short turnarounds, many crews of international cargo ships stay in port after docking. Their brief stints ashore are frequently spent in seafarers’ centres, where they can unwind and connect with families who are often oceans away, before climbing back aboard and shipping out.

As the UK is an island...

UK’s retailers solution is in the north?

Businesses going bust, job losses and rocketing Christmas prices for consumers.

That’s the festive doomsday scenario facing the UK’s retail sector as the southern port of Felixstowe – the UK’s busiest container port – hits a cargo loading and unloading backlog.

The legacy of a failed IT rollout in June and ongoing shortage of haulage capacity has resulted in an ongoing packed quayside and half empty warehouses as shipments take up to 14 days to process rather than the usual three to five days.

BIFA stressed the remained Felixstowe problems

On June 11th, 2018, with no prior warning, the Port of Felixstowe introduced the Next Generation Terminal Management System (nGen), a new terminal operating system (TOS). The system was already in use at twenty-five ports worldwide owned by Hutchinson Ports, however the introduction at Felixstowe went badly wrong and over three months later the position has not been fully resolved.

The Port state publicly that the new TOS is now “stable” however BIFA Members still face significant problems at...

Beleaguered UK importers prepared for further delays as more vessels divert from Southampton and Felixstowe

Chronic congestion at the UK’s two largest container ports is forcing ocean carrier planners to make further last-minute ship diversions, causing chaos to the country’s supply chain.
Landside congestion at Felixstowe and Southampton has added to the woes of the UK haulage industry, which is already suffering from an acute shortage of HGV drivers.
Even before the botched implementation of a new terminal operating system at Felixstowe in June, which was the …
