Increased rail traffic in Gothenburg

During 2018, 398,000 TEUs were transported to or from the port by rail. The figures were strongest during the final quarter of the year when rail-borne container freight increased by 27 per cent. “The fact that long-distance freight transport is recovering at a higher rate is a clear indication of the growing confidence in the Container Terminal throughout the country,” said Claes Sundmark, Vice President, Container, Ro-Ro and Rail at Gothenburg Port Authority.

During the past year, rail-borne...

Terminal’s transfer benefited Gothenburg Port

The Arken Combi Terminal at the Port of Gothenburg has just celebrated its first anniversary. The terminal links up sea, road and rail traffic effectively, resulting in a more efficient and more reliable logistics system, cleaner air, and a reduction in heavy goods traffic in the centre of Gothenburg.

At the 65,000-square-metre terminal, located beside the Ro-Ro Terminal and the Container Terminal in the outer port area, containers and trailers are now loaded and reloaded between road and rail...

Gothenburg Port to develop neighboring logistics properties

Gothenburg Port Authority has worked over a long period to secure consent to construct a number of logistics properties on a 400,000 sq m site directly adjacent to the port. The Port Authority has now been given the go-ahead by the Authority’s owners to begin developing the site. But before work gets under way, the Port Authority needs to establish an organisation to handle the undertaking.

Logistics facilities are very much in demand in Gothenburg, the main reason being that the Port of...

Gothenburg ro-ro traffic on the increase

The prospects for ro-ro traffic between Sweden and the continent are certainly looking bright. Volumes between Gothenburg and Belgium have increased for the ninth year in succession. Shipping companies are also in the process of expanding their networks from Gothenburg across large parts of Europe – often via the Belgian ports in Ghent and Zeebrugge, which act as hubs for intra-European ro-ro traffic.

During 2017, 254,000 ro-ro units were shipped between Gothenburg and Belgium, and the forecast...

The terminal will cover an area of 220,000 square metres and will be built using 350,000 cubic metres of dredge spoils from the river, the Göta Älv. The spoils come from routine dredging conducted to maintain...
