India keen to operate Bangladesh’s major port

Neighbouring India now wants to operate Bangladesh’s second seaport Mongla, where both New Delhi and Beijing are also keen to invest in new terminal construction.

India already has secured transshipment facilities at Bangladesh’s two seaports in Chittagong and Mongla for carrying cargoes to its landlocked seven-sister states in the North East to avoid travelling over 1,650 kilometres.

Cyclone leads to suspension of container operations at Bangladeshi ports

With cyclone “Sitrang” approaching Bangladeshi coasts, handling of containers and bulk cargoes at both the Chittagong and the Mongla seaports remained suspended from Monday (24 October) morning amid high wind and heavy rains.

The port authorities have sent all vessels to the deep sea from the jetties and the equipment was packed to avoid any incidents.

First Russian ship arrives in Bangladesh since start of Ukraine war

A Russian ship reached Bangladesh’s Mongla seaport carrying equipment for Ruppur nuclear power plant on 1 August. This is the first Russian ship that arrived in Bangladesh since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February.

The heavy load carrier/general cargo carrier, Kamilla began a journey on 28 June from Russian Tamaruk Port carrying 3,328 tonnes of machinery for the power plant.

Chittagong, Mongla seaports get new acts

The authorities of Bangladesh’s two major seaports, Chittagong and Mongla, got new acts, passed on 4 and 5 April in the parliament, empowering the port authorities to take decisions more independently instead of waiting for the government’s approval.

Both the port authorities now can give waivers, up to US$1,250, in the cases of rent, toll, fee, etc to port users in their own decision.
