Port of Montreal: Lockout starts

When Port of Montreal longshore workers voted against accepting “the last and final offer” presented by employers this past Thursday, the Maritime Employers Association (MEA), as it had said it would, imposed a lockout as of 9.00 p.m. Sunday. And this morning, on the first day of the lockout, the CEO of the Montreal Port Authority (MPA), Julie Gascon, warned about the severe economic consequences of a prolonged dispute for Montreal, Quebec, and all of Canada.

Lockout looms in Montreal port labor dispute

Employers at the Port of Montreal said they would lock out striking workers if their union rejected the latest contract offer.

The Maritime Employers Association (MEA) late Thursday submitted what it called a “final, comprehensive” offer to Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 375, calling for an overall 20% pay raise over six years. Absent a new agreement, the MEA said it would lock out union workers as of 9 p.m. Sunday.

CMA CGM applies low water surcharge in Montreal

French box carrier CMA CGM has announced the implementation of a Montreal low water surcharge, effective from 10 November for all shipments and 1 December for shipments to US & US territories, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil, Panama & Venezuela.

The surcharge from the major Canadian port to all destinations worldwide, except Brazil’s port of Manaus, will apply to all types of cargo, except out-of-gauge, and will be US$150 per TEU.

Millions in funding for key Montreal port commodity

The Montreal Port Authority has received CA$12.5 million ($8.99 million) from the government of Canada as part of the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF) for a project to redevelop and upgrade grain containerization operations at the Port of Montreal.

Imminent new strike in Montreal port

CUPE 375, the union representing longshore workers in Montreal, eastern Canada’s largest port, has issued a 24-hour strike notice, running from 7 am local time on 27 October, to 6.59 am (local time) on 28 October.

The strike comes amid an ongoing industrial action that started on 10 October. An earlier three-day strike, which disrupted operations at the Viau and Maisonneuve (Termont) terminals, ended on 2 October.

No good news on the long-running Port of Montreal labor dispute. The Longshoremen’s Union, CUPE Local 375, has called a 24 hour strike from Sunday, October 27, 2024, at 7:00 a.m. to Monday, October 28, 2024, at 6:59 a.m.
