Port of Oakland sets new record for peak season cargo volume

Port of Oakland reported a record-breaking peak season. Last month was the busiest September for import cargo in the port’s history, which followed another all-time record in August.

The Port of Oakland handled 168,289 TEUs loaded import containers in the past two months. That surpassed the previous August-September record of 158,320 20-foot loaded import containers set back in 2006.

One more month of import growth could give Oakland its busiest peak season in Port history.

Port of Oakland night gates will expand to speed up cargo flow

Another Port of Oakland marine terminal operator has announced that it’s opening night gates to accelerate containerized cargo flow. TraPac plans to add a second shift for harbor truckers beginning Oct. 15.

The move enables thousands of drivers to pick up or drop off Oakland containerized cargo from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., Monday-through-Thursday. Port officials said night operations should accelerate cargo flow while reducing truck queues that sometimes build outside terminal gates.

Import surge drives busiest August in Port of Oakland’s 91-year history

The Port of Oakland on Thursday reported the busiest August in its 91-year history, a record start to its peak season with imports up 9.2 percent from a year ago.

The Port, the third largest in California and among the nation’s top 10, attributed the gains to strong U.S. consumer spending.
