Port of Osaka surpasses 1.6 million TEUs in 2024 so far

In October, the Port of Osaka handled 190,844 TEUs of oceangoing containers, marking an 11.8% year-on-year increase and achieving growth for a second consecutive month. Exports reached 88,664 TEUs, up 10%, while imports totalled 102,220 TEUs, up 13.5%.

In the last month of the previous year, Japan’s six major ports collectively handled 1.17 million TEUs, reflecting a slight decrease of 0.5% compared to the same month of 2022.

According to preliminary data published by the Osaka Ports and Harbours Bureau, the Port of Osaka handled 166,982 TEUs in July, translating to an 11% decrease from the same month in 2022.

The Port of Osaka handled 2,129,417 TEU of oceangoing containers in 2019, up 2% from the previous year, based on preliminary figures. The total consisted of 967,940 TEU of exports, up 2%, and 1,161,477 TEU of imports, up 1%. As for loaded containers, 409,903 TEU were exported, down 4%, and 1,126,599 TEU were imported, up 1%, for a total of 1,536,502 TEU, which remained nearly unchanged. The Port of Osaka handled 172,971 TEUs of containers in May, decreasing 4% and suffering the first year-on-year contraction in three months, according to an announcement made by the city of Osaka’s Port and Harbor Bureau. Exports of loaded containers plunged 13% to 32,290 TEUs, and imports decreased a much milder 2% to 94,071 TEUs. Empty containers fell 2% to 94,071 TEUs in total.
