Piraeus’ port plans ready, awaits Gov’s approval

Reuters reports that Piraeus Port Authority boost its investment plans to lure more businesses. The majority of the port is owned by China’s COSCO shipping, who hopes to make Piraeus port into its gateway to Europe.

The new plan sees additional spending on building and operating a fourth container terminal which will boost Piraeus’ total throughput to 10 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) a year from 7.2 million TEUs now, and a much smaller mall.

COSCO plans new terminal at Piraeus Port

Cosco, the operator of Piraeus port, plans to build a fourth cargo pier, expanding its total investment in the port by 200 million euros to a total of 800 million, well-informed sources say.

In the new master plan it will submit for approval on August 20, after discussions with the government, the Piraeus Port Authority will include the construction of a fourth pier (Pier IV) with a capacity of 2.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), just east of the current Pier I.

Record amount of amphetamine Captagon seized at Port of Piraeus

Greek authorities have seized what they claim to be the world’s largest single haul of super-charged amphetamine Captagon pills, worth more than half a billion euros, onboard a container ship which arrived from Syria at Port of Piraeus, on Friday, 28 June.

Livestock carrier catches fire at Port of Piraeus

Fire took place erupted on board the livestock carrier Boi Branco, which was berthed at Piraeus port, Greece, in the morning May 30. As of now, the extent of the damages or the cause of the fire is not known, while no injuries were reported.

Mega container vessel suffered collision in Piraeus

The Coast Guard (Keratsini) of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus was informed that during the mooring operations of the mega container ship “THALASSA ELPIDA” flag of Singapore, the vessel collided with pier during berthing early in the morning May 1 in Piraeus, Greece.

Only material damage was reported from the incident. No injury was reported and no marine pollution was observed.
