Shanghai remains world’s busiest container port

Shanghai port maintained the top position in the world in terms of container throughput in 2019, according to Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong on Wednesday, January 15.

The container throughput of Shanghai port totaled 43.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units last year, ranking the first in the world for 10 consecutive years, Ying said when delivering his government work report at the ongoing annual session of the municipal people’s congress.

Spot rates from Shanghai to US slip

Container volumes at major Asian ports in June

Container volumes handled at major ports in Asia made a sharp contrast in June.

Port of Shanghai:

June container throughput at the port of Shanghai climbed 4.2% from the same month last year to 3.756 million TEUs compared to 3.603 million TEUs in the same month last year. In the first six months of the year, volumes rose 5.0% from the same period in 2018 to 21.536 million TEUs.

Major China ports’ cooperation

The Port of Shanghai will cooperate with the Port of Ningbo on the comprehensive development of the northern part of southeast China’s Xiao Yangshan port area, the China Daily reported Friday, Feb. 22.

Shanghai Port sees another record container throughput

Shanghai International Port (Group) Co. Ltd. (SIPG), the largest port group in the Chinese mainland, reported a record high container throughput last year.

SIPG, which operates all the public container and bulk terminals in the Port of Shanghai, said Tuesday that its container throughput in 2018 reached 42.01 million standard containers, or twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 4.4 percent year on year.
