Tacoma gets new cranes while Seattle removes old ones

The previous week four super-post Panamax container cranes were voyaged to Tacoma, Washington. In the meantime, four older STS cranes were removed at the Port of Seattle, a sign of the ever-increasing size of the modern container vessels.

Specifically, according to the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s statement, Tacoma’s new cranes have an outreach of 24 containers and a lift height of 165 feet above the pier deck, placing them among the largest on the West Coast.

They are similar to four others that...

Tacoma to welcome the new NWSA container cranes

The new container cranes come closer and closer to Tacoma. A huge ship carrying four super-post-Panamax container cranes is scheduled to travel through Puget Sound March 5 to Tacoma.

Ports of Tacoma, Seattle express tariff fears

The ports of Tacoma and Seattle are having a late-year surge. For the first 10 months of the year, combined statistics show, total container volumes are up just 1.3 percent. But for October alone, container traffic was up 9.9 percent from the same month a year ago.

That could be a positive indicator about the health of the world economy, which would be reassuring news given some of the recent cautions and warnings about a slowdown.

It’s more likely, though, that the surge is driven by importers...

Port of Tacoma ready to handle mega vessels

Evergreen’s Thalassa Axia, 1,200 feet long and with a 13,800 TEU capacity, arrived Thursday (Nov. 01) and is believed to be the largest ship to call at the port of Tacoma, according to port communications representatives.

It’s an example of the larger ships the port expects to see as they become more common for shipping lines on trans-Pacific routes.

Congress recently signed off on a channel deepening study to accommodate bigger ships at the port.

While this ship’s capacity is substantial, Katie...
