Container volumes increase at major Japanese ports

According to preliminary data from Japan’s transport ministry, the country’s six major ports processed 1.17 million TEUs in July, representing a 3.3% growth from the previous year.

This marks four consecutive months of year-on-year increase. Total exports accounted for 571,534 TEUs, up 3.3%, while imports reached 594,158 TEUs, up 3.2%.

In the last month of the previous year, Japan’s six major ports collectively handled 1.17 million TEUs, reflecting a slight decrease of 0.5% compared to the same month of 2022.

This was the third consecutive month of year-on-year contraction. Export volumes saw a modest increase of 1.9% to reach 619,415 TEUs, while imports experienced a decline of 3.1% to 552,103 TEUs.

Container throughput decreases at Tokyo Port

In October 2023, the Port of Tokyo witnessed a decrease of 10.3% in foreign-trade container handling, with a total of 352,680 TEUs.

According to JIFFA, loaded export containers amounted to 88,744 TEUs (down 4.8%), and empty export containers were 82,048 TEUs (down 11.7%). Imports comprised 175,246 TEUs of loaded containers (down 9.7%) and 6,642 TEUs of empty containers (down 47.9%).

Waiting times not exceed two hours at Tokyo Port Terminals

Average waiting times at Tokyo Port Terminals were more than one hour at seven terminals and less than one hour at five terminals on 8-29 May, according to a survey conducted by the Tokyo Trucking Association (TTA) on the 12 container terminals at the Port of Tokyo’s Aomi, Central Breakwater Outer, Oi and Shinagawa wharves.

Port of Los Angeles inks agreements with Tokyo and Yokohama ports

The Port of Los Angeles has signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the Ports of Tokyo and Yokohama in Japan, to cooperate on sustainability and environmental issues.

Port of Tokyo handles more than 2.15 million TEU in eight months

The Port of Tokyo has processed 2,151,234 TEU during the first eight months of 2021, which translates to around 5% increase from the corresponding period of the previous year, according to Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA).

Regarding the January-August period, exports accounted for 621,927TEU and imports for 1,529,307TEU, representing a growth of 10.8% and of 2.7%, respectively. At the same time, empties recorded a decline of 12.2% year-on-year, totalling 687,817TEU.

International box traffic at Tokyo port dips

International cargo exports from the Port of Tokyo amounted to 6.18 million tons in the first half (January-June) of 2019, down 5.5% year on year, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. Imports, meanwhile, totaled 17.61 million tons, down 1.3%.
