Port of Virginia increases volumes by 8.9%

The Port of Virginia continues to move near-peak season cargo volumes. The port’s container volume for January was 240,111 TEUs, or 134,638 containers, an increase of 8.9% compared to last year. Fiscal 2019 to date, total TEU volume is up 2.8% or 47,745 TEUs, i.e 18,365 containers.

Port of Virginia welcomes largest cranes to operate at US port

The largest cranes to operate in a US commercial port, standing 170 feet tall, arrived Monday at Port of Virginia, as part of the port’s efforts to align with the overall trend of bigger and bigger ships arriving.

According to data provided by The Associated Press, the Chinese-made gantry cranes towered over the ship that carried them through the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

The new cranes should be up and running in about two months in Portsmouth, a city near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

Largest US cranes enhance Virginia Port

The largest cranes in the United States arrived in Hampton Roads Monday.

The four ship-to-shore cranes arrived at The Port of Virginia fully-assembled aboard ZPMC’s Zhen Hua 27.

The Port of Virginia says the cranes will be able to service container vessels, regardless of size, in the years ahead. That includes Ultra Large Container Vessels currently calling on the port, and higher-volume ships of the future.

Port of Virginia marks a month-record

The Port of Virginia set a new record in October, handling more than 270,000 TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units. That total is more than 5,000 units above the port’s previous record.

The growth was driven by a 2 percent increase in loaded imports and a 14.5 percent increase in empty export containers. The port is trying to decrease its empty container inventory to improve efficiency and better focus on moving loaded containers.
