The world’s 30 busiest container ports recorded a 7% growth in volumes in 2024, boosted by increased traffic from China, the United States and South Asia, according to Alphaliner.

From January to May 2024, Chinese ports handled a container throughput of 132.8 million TEUs, marking an 8.8% increase year-on-year.

Chinese ports increase container throughput in first quarter

In the first quarter of 2024, the container throughput of China ports was 76.7 million TEUs, representing a 10% year-on-year increase.

As expected, the Shanghai port has the lion’s share, handling 12.45 million TEUs, followed by the Ningbo-Zhoushan and Guangzhou ports with 9.14 million and 6.09 million TEUs, respectively.
