USCG inspectors discover counterfeit pilot ladders

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a Maritime Safety Alert after marine inspectors from Sector Maryland-National Capital Region (NCR) discovered counterfeit pilot ladders during a Port State Control Examination at the Port of Baltimore.

The identification plate on the ladder (Figure 1) contained several errors, including referencing ISO 779-1 instead of the correct standard, ISO 799-1, and lacking the ISO 799-1 designation type.

The Liberian Registry has named Commander Norm Witt (USCG, retired) its vice president, port state control affairs.

Chief engineer gets prison term for oil record book, conspiracy and obstruction offenses

In a case that tells on all too familiar tale of oily bilge dumping, oil record book falsification, and a failed attempted at cover up, Denys Korotkiy, chief engineer of the vessel Donald was sentenced on Sept. 15 to serve twelve months and a day in prison for conspiracy to obstruct justice, obstruction of justice and failure to maintain an accurate oil record book.

Korotkiy was convicted on those charges June 9, following a five-day jury trial.

Shipboard fire safety concentrated inspection campaign to get underway
