Air Liquide partners with Porthos for innovative CO₂ capture and storage initiative

Air Liquide has revealed plans to construct a carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture facility, utilizing its existing hydrogen plant in the port of Rotterdam.

The company will employ CryocapTM, an advanced technological solution for CO₂ capture that relies on a cryogenic process.

The captured CO₂ will be transported via the Porthos infrastructure and securely stored in depleted gas fields beneath the seabed of the North Sea. The operational commencement of the CO₂ capture facility is scheduled for 2026.

First CO2 storage project in the Netherlands is launched

Porthos has made a final investment decision to build the Netherlands’ first big CO2 transport and storage system. Construction in Rotterdam will begin in 2024, with the Porthos system anticipated to be operational by 2026. The construction of Porthos infrastructure will cost US$1.4 billion. Porthos will now award contracts to complete the project now that the final investment decision has been made.

Porthos aims to close cooperation agreements

Early this year the Porthos project organization investigated the industrial interest to store CO2 in depleted offshore gas fields under the North Sea. Companies expressed more than sufficient interest in the system to continue with the preparations. Porthos now aims to close cooperation agreements (so called Joint Development Agreements, JDA) with interested companies.
