Port of LA-Long Beach railroad wins grant for electric locomotives

Pacific Harbor Line (PHL) — together with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) — has received partial funding for five zero-emission locomotives.

The funding for the acquisition will be provided through a U.S. Department of Transportation Consolidated Rail Infrastructure & Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program grant.

PHL, which serves the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach complex, is a short line of Anacostia Rail Holdings.

The grant comes after a year of testing the zero-exhaust emission EMD...

Union Pacific spending over $100M on 20 battery-electric locomotives

Union Pacific plans to purchase 20 battery-electric locomotives, which the company says will result in the largest investment in battery-electric technology by a U.S. Class I railroad.

UP (NYSE: UNP) plans to spend more than $100 million to purchase the 20 locomotives and upgrade yard infrastructure. The railroad will test the locomotives in yard operations in California and Nebraska.

The railroad will acquire 10 locomotives from Wabtec (NYSE: WAB) and 10 from Progress Rail, a Caterpillar (NYSE:...

BNSF, Progress Rail, Chevron to demonstrate hydrogen-powered locomotive

BNSF, Chevron U.S.A. and Caterpillar subsidiary Progress Rail have each signed a memorandum of understanding to demonstrate a locomotive powered by hydrogen fuel cells in order to confirm the feasibility and performance of hydrogen fuel to power locomotives.

The MOU has three objectives. If successful, the demonstration would be a step toward providing a lower-emitting alternative to diesel-fueled locomotives, the three companies said in a Tuesday release.

“BNSF is pleased to collaborate with...

Is compressed natural gas finally feasible for railroad applications?

CNGmotive’s solution for fueling locomotives provides potential to decarbonize rail using renewable natural gas.

Railroads transport goods extremely efficiently, especially in terms of fuel and greenhouse gas emissions. But most locomotives still run on fossil fuels.

Use of cleaner alternatives such as battery-electric or hydrogen requires new locomotives. However, diesel-powered locomotives can be retrofitted to run on natural gas, enabling companies to more cost-effectively reduce GHG emissions without having to retire locomotives that have years of useful life left.

Challenges of natural gas for rail

Stori...

Union Pacific will increase the amount of biodiesel that fuels locomotives used for Progress Rail.

Progress Rail, a Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) subsidiary that provides rolling stock and infrastructure solutions to rail customers worldwide, has agreed to use up to a 20% biodiesel blend for specific electro-motive diesel locomotives operated by UP (NYSE: UNP). The previous level that locomotives could use was a 5% biodiesel blend.

Increasing the biodiesel content is part of a broader effort to reduce...
