Propeller drops off 60-year old BC Ferries Queen of New Westminster

BC Ferries says that its 60-year old Queen of New Westminster ferry will be out of service for six months after an incident that occurred September 3 near the Tawwassen Terminal. It was discovered that the vessel’s starboard propeller had sheared off from the propeller shaft, with some 800 liters of light hydraulic oil spilling into surrounding waters.

New Propeller Blade Design For Substantial Fuel Savings

Berg Propulsion says it has secured a ‘substantial’ reduction in fuel consumption for Stena Line’s Stena Danica following a propeller blade replacement project, reports Bunker Spot.

Eliminating a persistent cavitation issue

Stena Danica entered service in 1983 and continues to connect the ports of Gothenburg and Frederikshavn. Last year, Stena Line asked Berg Propulsion to revise the 154.9m length ship’s twin propeller blades, with the aim of eliminating a persistent cavitation issue and...

[Answer] How a Ship is Berthed Using An Anchor?

For mariners, anchoring a ship is not just an art but a form of science involving a sense of pivot. The role of a ship’s anchor is extremely vital mainly in windy conditions.

Keeping the importance of this in mind, MarineInsight has formulated a detailed guide on how to go about anchoring a ship properly. Let’s take a look at that.

Berthing in windy conditions

While berthing a ship alongside a jetty or a pier in tidal or windy conditions, the role of the ship’s anchor is extremely vital.

Watch: Golden Ray parts added to artificial reef

Crews on Monday, January 6 2020, placed the 150-ton section of the capsized vessel M/V Golden Ray inside Reef SFC approximately 20 miles east-southeast of St. Simons Island.

Specifically, after the vessel grounding, the stern tube, propeller and rudder were removed and have been deposited at an artificial reef, approximately 20 miles east-southeast of St. Simons Island, Georgia. The components join a collection of M-60 battle tanks, rubble, reef balls and military landing craft at Georgia’s Reef...

What are Tug Boats?

A tug or more commonly a tugboat is a secondary boat which helps in mooring or berthing operation of a ship by either towing or pushing a vessel towards the port.

A tug is a special class of boat without which mega-ships cannot get into a port. Along with the primary purpose of towing the vessel towards the harbour, tug boats can be engaged in the purpose of providing essentials such as water, air, etc. to the vessel.

Tug boat eases the manoeuvring operation of vessels by forcing or tugging them...

New propeller concept to reduce underwater noise

Kongsberg Maritime has successfully adapted a propeller concept used in naval applications, aiming to provide operational and environmental benefits to commercial shipping customers. By deploying such a technology can significantly reduce cavitation-induced noise and erosion risk.

Kongsberg Blade Air Emission technology is now being applied to commercial ship propellers to limit the effect of underwater radiated noise on marine life. The Blade Air Emission concept applies the results of research...
