News Alert: Truck carrying radioactive material crashes in North Carolina

Part of Interstate 95 in Cumberland County, North Carolina, was closed for five hours Wednesday after a truck carrying a radioactive uranium compound crashed.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. ET near the junction of I-95 and Interstate 295, WAVY-TV reported. This is just northeast of Fayetteville.

Radioactive waste detected in container

An unknown amount of radioactive waste has been detected inside an export container at the Laem Chabang Deep Seaport, the port’s deputy director said.

Vice Adm Yutthana Mokkhao said the waste is being kept in the safety zone at the port which is equipped to handle radioactive situation and it is being handled by officials from Thailand’s Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT).

The waste was detected by x-ray officials and TINT was alerted on Thursday (Nov. 8).
