WASHINGTON — U.S. weekly rail traffic remains ahead of 2023 levels for the week ending Dec. 21, 2024.

According to statistics from the Association of American Railroads, overall traffic for the week was 523,912 carloads and intermodal units, up 7.8% from the same week a year ago. That includes 230,857 carloads, up 0.3%, and 293,055 containers and trailers, up 14.6% compared to the corresponding week in 2023.

Holiday leads to drop in weekly US rail traffic

WASHINGTON — The Thanksgiving holiday once again made for a big change in U.S. weekly rail traffic. This time, that change was negative.

Traffic was down 13.8% from the same week in 2023, a week after it showed a whopping 25.6% gain. The biggest factor, in both cases, was when Thanksgiving fell — in the 47th week of 2023 and the 48th week of 2024 — with less traffic moved because of the holiday.

WASHINGTON — Weekly U.S. rail traffic showed its biggest gain in seven weeks over the period ending Nov. 2, boosted by a double-digit increase in intermodal traffic.

WASHINGTON — Weekly U.S. rail traffic rebounded into positive territory compared to 2023 for the week ending Oct. 12, after falling below previous-year levels a week earlier.

WASHINGTON — U.S. rail traffic continued its recent surge in the week ending Aug. 31, according to statistics from the Association of American Railroads.

The week saw volume of 516,632 carloads and intermodal units, up 8.4% from the same week in 2023. It was the third straight week of increases of 8% or more, following gains of 8% for the week ending Aug. 17 and 9.5% for the week ending Aug. 24.

U.S. rail traffic saw another surge in the week ending Aug. 24, according to statistics from the Association of American Railroads.
