US MARAD advises on maritime piracy

US Maritime Administration (MARAD) noted that in 2018 there were 18 reports concerning boardings, attempted boardings, attacks, hijackings, and kidnappings in the Sulu and Celebes Seas. In the meantime, MARAD addressed that there were 146 reports on piracy incidents to U.S. flagged operators with vessels transiting or operating in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG).

ReCAAP ISC: Second abducted fisherman of Sri Dewi 1 rescued

The ReCAAP ISC in its weekly report on maritime piracy for 15-21 January, published updates on the fishermen of the Sri Dewi fishing vessel, that were abducted in the waters off Gaya Island, Semporna, Sabah on September 11, 2018. ReCAAP ISC: Robbery results to generator’s missing parts

According to ReCAAP ISC, during 15-21 January 2018, one incident of armed robbery was reported concerning a Panama-flagged cargo vessel, called ‘Mito’. The incident took place in Indonesia, as the vessel was anchored at the Ciwandan port.

Specifically, the armed robbery took place on January 11, at 07.00 local hour.

In 2018, ReCAAP ISC started using Data Analytics to provide a deeper analysis of incidents based on the data it gathered in the last 12 years from 2007-2018. Standard Club: Piracy situation in Southeast Asia

The 2017 Annual Report of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported a decrease in piracy incidents globally with 180 reported incidents in 2017, down from 191 in 2016 and 246 in 2015. ReCAAP ISC: Piracy incident in East Malaysia causes master’s injury

According to ReCAAP ISC, during 25-31 December 2018, one incident of piracy of the Malaysian tug boat,’Magtrans II’ occurred, off Tambisan Island, Sabah, East Malaysia. In addition the report presents information on how the incident took place.

Pirate skiffs surround tanker on the Arabian Sea

In its weekly report for the period of 11-17 December, the ReCAAP ISC informed it received no reports of incident of piracy or armed robbery against ships in Asia.
