Amid COVID-19 crisis and the negative impacts that has brought, Diamond Offshore Drilling Inc. filed for bankruptcy following the unprecedented crash in crude prices that’s affecting demand for oil exploration at sea, as Bloomberg reported.

New Asian start-ups decarbonisation programme launched

Asia’s first ‘Decarbonising Shipping’ initiative has recently launched with the aim to harness the power of start-ups to meet UN targets on greenhouse gas emissions.  The regional initiative, based in Singapore, is part of the Trade & Transport Impact (TTI) programme from venture development firm Rainmaking to bring startups together with backers with maritime experience and expertise.

Plans revealed for world’s first zero-emission electric bunker tankers

Japanese shipping company Asahi Tanker Co., Ltd. revealed plans to build the world’s first two zero-emission electric tankers. These are scheduled to enter Tokyo Bay as marine fuel supply vessels.

The vessel specifications will use the “e5 tanker” planned designed by e5 Laboratories, Inc. Building is expected from March 2022 to March 2023.

Construction of first hydrogen fuel cell vessel in the US to be completed

US-based shipbuilder All American Marine, Inc. (AAM) has secured a contract by SWITCH Maritime (SW/TCH) to complete the aluminum construction and outfitting of a passenger zero-emissions, hydrogen-powered, electric ferry that will operate in the California Bay Area, under the ‘Water-Go-Round’ project.

This is the first hydrogen fuel cell vessel in the US, representing a monumental step in the maritime industry’s transition to a sustainable future.

Wärtsilä conducts first combustion trials for ammonia as a fuel

Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has initiated combustion trials using ammonia, to help prepare for the use of ammonia as a fuel that can contribute to reducing both the shipping’s and energy sectors’ greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of the tests, ammonia was injected into a combustion research unit to better understand its properties.

Based on initial results, the tests will continue on both dual-fuel and spark-ignited gas engines.

All Indian major ports run on solar and wind energy

Indian Major ports have turned to use renewable energy in order to cut costs and reduce the emissions. Namely, India is the first nation to have all government-owned ports running on solar and wind energy.

The country’s Shipping Ministry informed that under the “green port’ initiative”, the 12 major ports are to install grid-connected, roof-top solar and wind power projects, in an effort to facilitate their daily operations, such as shore-power supply to visiting vessels, in an eco-friendly  way.

Gasum teams up with Deltamarin and Wärtsilä for ship optimization

Gasum teamed up with ship design company Deltamarin and Wärtsilä, a leader in maritime technologies, for cleaner maritime transport, following the global sustainability goals for a greener shipping.

HELCOM joins EMERGE project to reduce emissions

The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) recently joined Europe’s EMERGE project, which aims to reduce shipping emissions around the European marine waters.

Cargill, Rainmaking partner for decarbonization program
