Consider freight consolidation for food service needs

This summer is shaping up to be one of the hottest — for food logistics that is. After a long hiatus, restaurants and hospitality vendors are firing up the grills, bracing once again for the heat of the summertime rush.

An uptick in business is just what the food service industry wants to see and, as orders begin to ramp up, it presents an ideal opportunity for them to capitalize on enhanced network optimization via inbound LTL consolidation.

Freight consolidation is a specialty of...

Refrigerated truckload market is having a polarizing summer

Spot rates for refrigerated (known as reefer inside the industry) truckloads continue to see upward pressure as contracted load acceptances increase this summer — leading to a polarizing experience for shippers.

Heated produce season may further freeze capacity

This summer is shaping up to deliver a very strong season for produce. With capacity as tight as it is now, many industry leaders are speculating that any difficulty in sourcing refrigerated trailers may impact the dry van segment as well, considering the ongoing effort supply chains are making to replenish inventory amid freight network imbalances.

“Currently, there is no indication of either demand slowing or supply increasing,” said Sean Burke, chief commercial officer at Echo Global Logistics

Food service providers struggle to keep up with reopening of America

As the summer months are heating up, so too are Americans’ appetites for dining out, going to the ballpark and attending multiday music festivals — activities almost unimaginable a year ago.

Recent findings from a Morning Consult survey concluded that 66% of Americans would feel safe dining out at restaurants, compared to last year, when that figure never rose above 42%.

Entering July, most mask mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, much to the relief of restaurants and other...

Stevens Transport was founded by Steven L. Aaron in Dallas, Texas in 1980 in the wake of the deregulation of the trucking industry. Steven had just sold his first business endeavor, Stevens Food, a meatpacking business based in Paris, Texas.

Though he did not have much knowledge about the transportation industry, Steven did know the meat industry and began to search for customers there. In a time when other trucking companies were going under, Stevens Transport flourished. In the company’s...

3PLs should focus on their specialties

Many third-party logistics providers (3PLs) will tell you freight takes serious hustle.

Balancing the unique needs of each customer can be challenging for brokers as their network of carriers, suppliers and partners grows. Chasing after a wide variety of transactional freight — although lucrative at times — may risk spreading your services too thin.

Excelling in only a handful of services is better than doing everything just so-so; simply meeting expectations won’t turn any heads, which means...

Stephen P. Hrobuchak, Sr. and his son, Stephen P. Hrobuchak, Jr., founded Transcontinental Refrigerated Lines, or TRL, in the northeastern Pennsylvania town of Pittston in 1975. They started the company with just two trucks. The company grew rapidly, however. According to statements by the Hrobuchaks at the time, they achieved fast growth by placing strong emphasis on equipment and on service.

Continued growth during the 1980s and 1990s

By 1987, the company had been so successful that it had...
