At Rail Trends: Grants, real estate key to short line rail growth

Short lines are on the headpin as the North American rail business embraces a welcome rebound.

Regional Rail acquires another North Carolina asset

Regional Rail has acquired the assets of Clinton Terminal Railroad in North Carolina.

The acquisition, announced this week, will expand Regional Rail’s presence in North Carolina. Regional Rail had acquired Carolina Coastal Railway in 2020. Carolina Coastal will be the new owner and operator of Clinton Terminal Railroad, which will be named the Clinton Branch of the railway. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Regional Rail expands footprint to include western Canada

Short-line owner and operator Regional Rail has acquired freight rail assets in western Canada from grain company G3 Canada.

The acquisition from Winnipeg, Manitoba-based G3 Canada, which operates a network of grain elevators and port terminals, includes the Great Sandhills Railway, as well as three other freight rail assets in the region that serve agricultural and energy customers. 

Regional Rail is affiliated with 3i, an infrastructure investment firm headquartered in the United Kingdom.

Regional Rail inks deal to operate Port Manatee Railroad until 2036

Port Manatee in Florida has reached an agreement with Regional Rail LLC for the operation of Manatee port-owned short-line railroad through at least 2036, with options through 2051.

Under the agreement, which will take effect on 1 December, Port Manatee Railroad LLC will be operated as a subsidiary of Pennsylvania-based company, Regional Rail, which already operates seven other short-line railroads in the United States, including three in Florida with more than 885 km of track in total.
