The necessity of nuclear power

The United States’ nuclear energy industry has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s power generation landscape. Beginning in the mid-20th century, the U.S. rapidly expanded its nuclear portfolio, driven by the promise of a virtually limitless, low-carbon energy source. And according to a new report by the International Energy Agency, 2025 will be a record year for nuclear power generation — but nuclear’s comeback wasn’t a sure thing.

Rebuilding American munitions production

Beginning in March 2022, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine was marked by a massive advantage in artillery, giving Russian forces a substantial advantage on the battlefield. In the first year of the war, Russia averaged more than 50,000 artillery shots per day, while Ukraine never managed more than 10,000 daily artillery fires through the end of 2023. The sheer volume of artillery fire overwhelmed Ukrainian defenses, illustrating gaps in the country’s own munitions production capabilities.

US Steel sues Biden over blocked merger with Nippon

Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel filed a lawsuit Monday alleging President Joe Biden unlawfully blocked Nippon’s $14.9 billion purchase of the American steel maker.

Biden on Friday rejected Japan-based Nippon Steel’s takeover bid of the Pittsburgh-based steel manufacturer, citing national security concerns.

“As I have said many times, steel production — and the steel workers who produce it — are the backbone of our nation,” Biden said in a news release. “A strong domestically owned and operated steel...

Trump’s tariffs: A boost for domestic trucking demand

Over the past few months, a number of folks in the media have compared tariffs to sales taxes. While tariffs are a form of taxation, they are fundamentally different from sales taxes.

Tariffs are imposed at the import stage based on the declared value of goods, which does not include subsequent costs like labor, marketing or retailer profit margins. Consequently, the effect of a tariff on the retail price is typically less than the tariff rate itself.

For example, a car might have a modest 5%...

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Canadian Pacific Kansas City CEO Keith Creel is confident that free trade will continue in North America despite President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada.

U.S. trade with Mexico and Canada has grown since the Trump-driven United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement and went into effect in 2020, Creel points out. The pandemic,...

Trump tariffs would put cross-border rail traffic in the crosshairs

This story originally appeared on Trains.com.

President-elect Donald Trump’s plans to impose 25% tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada could have a chilling impact on cross-border rail traffic, which has been one of the few sources of volume growth for North American Class I railroads.

Trump announced the plans Monday night in a social media post, saying he would sign an executive order on Jan. 20, 2025, his first day in office. The order also would hit goods produced in China with a...

Trump tariffs to slow US trade, says analyst

President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs will likely blunt U.S. imports, especially from China, but also exports by American manufacturers, a trade analyst predicts.

“The three key words for U.S. trade in 2025 are ‘uncertainty,’ ‘uncertainty’ and ‘uncertainty,’ and add ‘disruption,’” said Mary E. Lovely, Anthony M. Solomon senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. “Trump’s trade policy will cause a lot of headaches for shippers and supply chain professionals.”
