Slow Scrubber Retrofits Take a Toll on Box Ship Fleet

Scrubber retrofits have taken out some 839,100 teu of containership capacity, or 3.6% of the fleet, reports Seatrade Maritime News.

Scrubber retrofits

The retrofitting of scrubbers, mainly on large containerships, has seen the idle boxship fleet move up to 225 ships totalling 1.32m teu as of the 25 November this year Alphaliner said in a newsletter.

Reflecting the large size of vessel being retrofitted with scrubbers 839,100 teu of capacity that is out of the market for the installation of exhaust...

Scrubber Retrofitting Delays Are Having a Domino Effect

According to Alpha Tanker, shipyards are estimated to be at close to maximum capacity and thus individual scrubber retrofitting delays are having a domino effect, reports Lloyd’s List.

Duration for installation

The average time for installation of a scrubber is 40 days, longer than the anticipated 30 days.

Delays will keep at least 40 to 50 tankers off hire for the rest of the year.

Some 86 tankers have entered dry dock for retrofitting scrubbers so far in 2019, compared with 153 bulk carriers and...

Lack of Ambition Threatens IMO Emissions Reduction Targets

A “clear gap” in shipping’s development of low-carbon and zero-carbon fuels and technologies is threatening to derail IMO efforts to curb industry emissions, reports LNG World Shipping.

Report from CDP

A report from UK-based non-profit Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) cited the gap as existing between “company ambition and the technologies and fuels required to deliver IMO’s long-term emission reductions”.

Among the 18 large, publicly listed shipping companies it analysed, only a few had taken...

Is BAWAT- USCG Type Approval Just A Step Away?

  • BAWAT claims that it is close to achieving full USCG approval for its pasteurisation-based ballast water management system (BWMS).
  • The system has already passed three USCG land-based tests with results that demonstrate the total efficacy of the technological process.
  • They have scheduled a shipboard test for April in the difficult waters of Port Klang and the Mekong River estuary.
  • The years to come will be very busy times for retrofitting, especially in 2021/22, perfect for the BWMS.

New is Better in LNG Propulsion : Concludes Major Study

  • Study shows owners prefer LNG propulsion in newbuilds than retrofit existing ones.
  • Out of 143 vessels of global LNG-fuelled fleet, only 8 are retrofits as they spend more time in emissions control area (ECA).
  • Phased adoption of LNG is beneficial as it will allow time to develop the necessary additional infrastructure.
  • LNG averaged US$220 per tonne less than ECA-compliant LSMGO and also retained a substantial discount relative to LSMGO.
  • LNG price hovered between US$64 – US$38 a tonne lower than...
