A pair of less-than-truckload carriers on somewhat divergent paths provided first-quarter updates on Tuesday that displayed no material change of course. Old Dominion Freight Line saw volumes sag again in February as it plays the long game at the bottom of the cycle, while competitor Saia reported another large tonnage increase as it fills its recently expanded network through the downturn.

Roadrunner announces first general rate increase since 2021

Less-than-truckload carrier Roadrunner announced Monday a blanket rate hike for the first time since 2021. A 6.9% general rate increase across multiple tariff codes will go into effect Wednesday.

The Downers Grove, Illinois-based company said the GRI will impact select lanes across its direct metro-to-metro long-haul network. The headline percentage increase is the expected average change to base rates and will affect customers differently depending on shipment distances.

Roadrunner expands Canadian cross-border LTL service

Less-than-truckload transportation provider Roadrunner announced Wednesday it has expanded its Canadian cross-border service to include Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton along with other locations in Canada. The long-haul, metro-to-metro specialist said the expanded service into western Canada will be served from Seattle.

Smart Guarantee gives customers the option to pay a 25% fee, subject to a $75 minimum, for day-specific guaranteed delivery. Less-than-truckload provider Roadrunner said Wednesday it has improved transit times on 149 lanes throughout its network.
