International Roadcheck results: Carriers have room for improvement

Results of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) 2023 International Roadcheck are in. The numbers reveal not much has changed since last year, and there is still plenty of room for motor carriers to improve their overall safety and compliance.

The annual three-day inspection effort took place May 16-18 throughout the U.S., Mexico and Canada. CVSA-certified inspectors hit the roads to conduct as many level I, II and III inspections as possible. This year, 59,429 Roadcheck inspections...

FMCSA data shows rise in crash rates among new-entrant carriers

WASHINGTON — Preliminary data compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reveals a steady rise in crashes involving large trucks among companies that entered the industry since 2018.

The data was presented by FMCSA statistician Dan Burrill during the agency’s annual Analysis, Research, and Technology Forum on Wednesday.

The data was presented as a supplement to an analysis of the surge in new common-carrier registrations since just before and during the pandemic. In 2021, for...

International Roadcheck is quickly approaching; here’s how to prepare

International Roadcheck is set for May 16-18, marking the 35th year since the annual event began.

Around 15 CMV inspections take place every minute during the three-day blitz, according to CVSA, making it the largest enforcement program involving commercial vehicles in the world.

This year’s planned focuses will be anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement.

“ABS violations are not out-of-service violations,” CVSA stated. “However, the anti-lock braking system plays a critical role in...

ELD transfer violation could cause snowball effect on CSA scores

Up until December, motor carriers’ Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores weren’t impacted by a common hours-of-service violation: A driver not being able to transfer logs to a law enforcement officer during roadside inspections.

But now, the once zero-point violation could cost carriers at least three points and potentially more.

“This is pretty significant because what happens here is not only can we get hit with that one violation, but that could lead to several other violations,...

FMCSA considering electronic IDs for all trucks

Truck with wifi symbol

A rulemaking ordered under the Obama administration will consider whether all trucks should be outfitted with a unique ID, overhauling the way trucks are inspected.

The advanced notice of proposed rulemaking is to be published in the Federal Register on Friday. It is in response to a request in February 2015 by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance to reconsider a similar request by CVSA that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration denied in 2013.

In November 2015 under FMCSA...

FMCSA targeting ELDs, ‘unfit’ carriers in 2022

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will be proposing new rules in 2022 affecting ELDs, automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems and roadside inspections, according to the Office of Management and Budget.

The Biden administration’s latest agenda on regulatory and deregulatory actions published Friday included four proposals that are currently in the pre-rule stage at FMCSA, with formal notices scheduled to be issued between March and June next year.

Among the planned proposed rules:...

FMCSA issues new driver-ban rules for drug and alcohol abusers

States have until November 2024 to comply with a new requirement that they ban drivers with drug and alcohol violations from operating a truck before completing the return-to-duty process.

The rule is scheduled to be posted in the Federal Register on Thursday. It resulted from a 2020 Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration proposal requiring state agencies to stop issuing, renewing or upgrading commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) or commercial learner’s permits (CLPs) to drivers with drug...
