Truckload carriers started raising driver pay nearly a year and a half ago as demand skyrocketed. Following the initial COVID outbreak, consumers changed their spending habits to ready themselves for a prolonged period of at-home living, which meant more trucks would be needed to bring more household and durable goods to market. The need for additional capacity has been tough to meet for an industry that perpetually struggles to recruit and retain drivers.

Another round of driver pay increases

Roehl Transport announced Monday that pay will increase between $4,000 to $6,000 annually for most of its company drivers. The increase will be effective May 24 throughout its reefer, flatbed, van, curtainside and dedicated segments.

This will be the second pay increase for the Marshfield, Wisconsin-based truckload carrier this year. The company bumped annual pay $2,000 to $3,000 for accident-free drivers in February.

There was good news and some questionable news over the weekend. The good news can be summed by the trucking industry deciding it needed more vehicles last month, pushing up sales 108% year-over-year. There was another sale, though, that could generate more questions from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which is investigating former Nikola CEO Trevor Milton. He sold 3.5 million of his Nikola shares for $49 million six months after he resigned in a cloud of controversy.

More carriers increasing driver pay

Driver pay on the rise

A couple of truckload carriers have raised driver pay heading into 2021. Beacon Transport announced Monday a 3-cents-per-mile pay increase for new drivers effective Jan. 1.

The La Vergne, Tennessee-based truckload carrier said the increase is one of the largest in its 20-year history and places pay for all new drivers at 50 cents per mile or higher.

Several carriers announce driver pay increases in December

Roehl Transport has announced a pay bump for accident-free company drivers. The performance-based plan will increase pay for qualifying drivers by $2,000 to $3,000 annually. The new program begins Feb. 1.

Carriers warn feds’ hair-testing plan may undercut drug clearinghouse

The Trump administration’s plan for using hair follicles to screen truck drivers for drugs could weaken the effectiveness of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, according to those commenting on the proposal.
