Ro/Ro traffic in Gothenburg increase

Ro/Ro traffic between Sweden and the continent are increasing, as volumes between Gothenburg and Belgium have risen for the ninth consecutive year. Namely, the forecast for 2018 expects a 10% increase for Ro/Ro units.

EMSA: 25% of accidents on Ro-Ros are fire related

EMSA created an infographic analyzing the operation of Ro-ROs. In this infographic EMSA notes that from 2011 until 2018 3236 accidents regarding Ro-Ros have been reported, of which 25% are fire related.

In fact, there are three main types of accidents that have taken place in Ro-Ros:

  • Fire related – 25%;
  • Collisions – 19%;
  • Loss of control – 16%

Chemical leak reported on Ro-Ro in Zeebrugge

According to information, there was a chemical leak on board the Finnish Ro-Ro Mistral at Zeebrugge, Belgium, on October 29. Emergency services responded to the leak, while cargo operations were stopped.

Namely, a chemical leak on board the Finnish Ro-Ro Mistral at Zeebrugge was reported at emergency services, which made all cargo operations to stop.

Until now, it is not known what kind of chemicals leaked, nor the volume.

MEPC 73 upholds EEDI targets for Ro-Ro vessels

IMO’s MEPC 73 decided to uphold previously agreed sector-specific Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) targets for Ro-Ro passenger and Ro-Ro freight vessels. The committee tightened EEDI requirements for certain ship types, but confirmed that ferries would be among the categories where it is appropriate to retain the original timeline and reduction rates. These had been set in three phases, requiring improvements of 10% by 2015, 20% by 2020 and 30% by 2025.
