Vale completes world’s first rotor sail installation on capesize bulk carrier

Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Vale International SA (VALE), based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, announced that a 200,000-ton class bulk carrier, currently employed under a mid–term contract for transportation of iron ore for Vale, has been successfully retrofitted with two 35- by 5-meter Norsepower Rotor Sails and marked its first call at Ponta da Madeira, Brazil. MOL and Vale first announced this project over a year ago.

Berge Bulk puts Anemoi rotor sails on a Valemax

Berge Bulk ship fitted with Anemoi rotor sails

Singapore-headquartered Berge Bulk reports that its 388,000 dwt Valemax ore carrier Berge Neblina is now en route to Brazil fitted with four Anemoi rotor sails. Each is 35 meters tall and has a 5 meters diameter. The rotor sails are integrated with a folding deployment system that allows them to lay flat to mitigate impact on air draft and cargo handling operations when in port.

By harnessing wind energy, Berge Neblina will be able to reduce the load on the main engine while maintaining speed,...

Oldendorff opts for Norsepower for Teck rotor sail retrofit

™

Helsinki, Finland, headquartered Norsepower is hailing the decision by Oldendorff Carriers to fit a bulker chartered by Canadian mining giant Teck Resources with three Norsepower rotor sails. As we reported in December, the Teck rotor sail retrofit comes as the result of a decision by Teck and Oldendorff to make a joint investment in wind propulsion to further reduce CO2 emissions in Teck’s supply chain. The investment will see the vessel Dietrich Oldendorf, which carries shipments of Teck...

Deltamarin awarded design contract for new Airbus ships

Airbus ship profile view

Turku, Finland, headquartered Deltamarin has been selected to design the three wind assisted RO/RO vessels that France’s Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) will operate under a charter from Airbus. The aircraft manufacturer is looking to cut the carbon emissions of its fleet of vessels used to transport aircraft subassemblies between Saint-Nazaire, France, and its single-aisle aircraft final assembly line in Mobile, Ala., and the new Airbus ships promise big carbon savings.

Teck and Oldendorff to fit bulker with rotor sails

In another example of how charterers are helping push forward the move to greener shipping, Canadian mining giant Teck Resources is making a joint investment with Oldendorff Carriers that will see Norsepower rotor sails retrofitted to the vessel Dietrich Oldendorff.

The ship, which carries shipments of Teck steelmaking coal from the Port of Vancouver, will be outfitted with the rotor sail system by mid-2024.

The rotor sails generate lift from the wind, which is translated into additional thrust,...
