Battles over California’s Advanced Clean Trucks rule rage far beyond state line

With slightly tightened restrictions under the California Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule having gone into effect at the start of 2025 and the prospect of numerous states following the Golden State’s lead, the regulatory world has been awash in dueling communications on the subject.

On a microeconomic level, the ACT has led to the halting of some truck sales in Oregon. But a bigger battle is taking shape across multiple states.

Unlike its sister regulation, the Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule,...

Rush Enterprises keeps momentum in softening Class 8 aftermarket

High interest rates and low freight rates slowed the growth of Class 8 aftermarket sales at Rush Enterprises in the third quarter. But the nation’s largest network of truck dealerships found plenty of offsets to support strong overall results.

Class 8 truck sales rose 3% compared with a year ago, a period of severe constraint as OEMs began to meet pent-up demand that mushroomed during the pandemic.

“Our over-the-road customers … are being negatively impacted by high interest rates, and low...

Outrider hiring globally for launch of autonomous distribution yards

Outrider Inc. founder and CEO Andrew Smith is the very definition of deliberate. Each robotic advance his company has made to a dangerous or dirty job in a distribution yard builds on another. Since raising $73 million in a Series C round in January, he’s been growing his team.

“While a lot of folks were pulling back on developing their teams, we’ve continued to build out Outrider’s leadership position in both safety technology and deep learning, or AI, for industrial systems,” Smith told me...

Why Class 8 truck orders are outperforming shaky economy

Class 8 truck orders in February outperformed what tracking firms expected, suggesting fleets still have money for new equipment.

It was the first time in the last five months that year-over-year orders came in higher. The industry hit a near record in September and then retreated.

“Over the past year, total net orders reached 303,000 units. In any market, this is a strong number,” Eric Starks, chairman of FTR Transportation Intelligence, said in a news release. “However, given the uncertainty in...

Falling used truck prices push largest dealership network to sidelines

Falling prices for used trucks might be good news for those in the market for older iron. But they are having an opposite effect on Rush Enterprises, the nation’s largest new and used truck dealership network.

“Looking ahead, we expect used truck values to continue to decline, and we plan to maintain our low inventory levels until conditions begin to normalize,” Rush Enterprises CEO Willam “Rusty” Rush said Thursday on the company’s earnings’ conference call.

Rush had strong financial results in...

Months of accepting only a trickle of heavy-duty orders turned into a torrent in September as  Class 8 truck manufacturers fully opened orderbooks, resulting in a preliminary net order record of 53,700 units, ACT Research reported.
